Florence Mary (Cardinale) Cerrone

April 26, 1924 - January 6, 2021

Florence Mary Cerrone (Cardinale), 96, formerly of North Syracuse, passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at The Commons on St. Anthony Nursing Home in Auburn. Florence was the daughter of Italian immigrants, Giacomina (D’Amica) and Anthony Cardinale and a life resident of the Syracuse area until moving to The Commons. She was a graduate of North High School and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII stationed in NYC at the District Intelligence Office. Florence retired from the NYS Thruway Authority in 1992 after 26 years of service as a stenographer in the Division Toll Office. She will be remembered for her dedication to her family including the exceptional care she gave her husband during his nursing home confinement while being his most forceful advocate, for instilling the pursuit of education in her children and for her greatest joy which was spending time with and doting on her grandchildren. Florence enjoyed knitting for her family and doing crossword puzzles. At 96 years old she could still complete the Jumble puzzles faster than her family. She also loved being available to help with the grandchildren when they were young and reveled in their accomplishments as they grew. Florence was able to live alone in her own home until recently when aging and the onset of dementia required skilled nursing care. She was remarkably healthy until recently when she was exposed to and tested positive for the Coronavirus. She was predeceased by her husband, Nicholas A. Cerrone in 2005; three brothers, Silvo, William and Harry; two sisters, Pearl (Cardinale) Martin and Vera (Cardinale) Giarrusso; and sister-in-law, Christina (Cerrone) Verzino. Florence is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Harvey) Bell of Skaneateles; a son, Nicholas A. (Bridget) Cerrone, Jr of Marcellus; three grandchildren, Jerrad Nicholas Bell, Kaytlin Leigh Bell (Ben Garrett), and Audrey Nicole Cerrone; two great-grandchildren, Anna Rose Bell and Harvey Nicholas Bell; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Suzanne Cerrone; and several Cerrone and Cardinale nieces and nephews. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic services will be private. A celebration of life gathering will be held at a later date. THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements with entombment at Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum. The family would like to thank the kind and caring staff at The Commons on St. Anthony for their extraordinary care especially during this difficult time; to the North Syracuse Police Department for watching over Florence while she was in her home; and to her wonderful neighbors on Wells Ave E. who were always looking out for her. Donations in her memory can be made to the North Syracuse Police Department PBA, 600 S. Bay Rd., North Syracuse, NY 13212.
