Giovanni “John” Failla, 70, of Syracuse, passed away on Wednesday at Crouse Hospital. He was born in Sicily, son of the late Salvatore and Josephine (Caronna) Failla and came to the United States in 1969. He was employed with Learbury for 25 years and was very mechanically inclined. He was always willing to go out of his way to help those who needed help. John loved spending time with family, friends, and especially his beloved grandchildren. He was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and playing bocce. John also enjoyed his garden, his homemade wine, his fig trees, and had an extensive tool collection. For the past 3 years, John enjoyed spending time on his porch in Florida. John is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Raffaela (Barbuto) Failla; daughter, Josephine (Chris) Stephenson of Manlius; sons, Sam (Cherise) of Fayetteville and Michael of North Syracuse; five grandchildren, Alex, Gio, Ella, Elena, and Nicholas; brother, Antonino Failla; sister-in-law, Caterina Failla; along with several sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday. April 19, 2021 at 9 a.m. at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, and at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, 406 Court Street in Syracuse, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Family and friends may call on Sunday, April 18, 2021 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home, 3401 Vickery Road (corner of Buckley Road) in North Syracuse. In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org
