October 13, 1932 - March 30, 2021
Josephine DeRegis, “Josie” passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at the age of 88. Josie was born on October 13th, 1932 to the late Filomeno and Mary Frances (Posato) Cappelletti. She was one of twelve children raised by first generation Italian immigrant parents. She was proud of her Italian heritage and treasured the relationship with her siblings. Josie grew up on the Northside of Syracuse and graduated from North High School in 1951. Always known for her style and grace, she was voted best dressed and was a cheerleader in high school. As a teenager, she was also proud of her Junior Olympics experience in Track & Field. Josie always wished there was more opportunity for young women in athletics during those days and was a supporter of the advances of women in sports, including her three granddaughters. She went to work after graduating high school at Royal Globe Insurance to help support her family. These younger years truly helped shape her values and sense of family, unselfishness, and strong work ethic. Josie married Dominick DeRegis in 1956 and selflessly dedicated herself to her family and raising her four sons. She was the epitome of dignity and class with the gift of personality. Friends and family describe her as someone that could brighten the darkest room and bring a smile to the saddest face. Josie was one of those remarkable individuals who showed her immense love by caring, helping, and providing to anyone in need. She was lovingly called “Grams” by her 11 grandchildren and lived to cheer them on at all of their sporting events and celebrations. Always the life of any gathering, she never hesitated to demonstrate her infectious laughter and sense of humor. Josie had a great group of lifelong friends that she cherished and often spoke of fond memories of time spent together. She was an avid reader enjoying books on music, history, and entertainment, and a lifelong Yankees fan. Josie lived a long and beautiful life and will be remembered for her loving character, strength, and devotion to her family. She touched the lives of the many blessed to know her. She is predeceased by her husband, Dominick DeRegis in 2010; her brothers and their spouses, Nicholas (Muriel), Lawrence (Alice), John (Mary), Cosmo (Gloria), Jack (Vera), Thomas (Mary), and Frank Cappelletti; her sisters and their spouses, Loretta Cappelletti, Anna (Tony) Nappi and Stella (Richard) Lansing. Josie is survived by her four children, Maurice (Carol), David (Michele), Steven (Donna), and James (Christine) DeRegis; 11 grandchildren, Nicholas, Michael, Jacquelynne, Dominick, Madison, Matthew, Ethan, Anthony, Isabella, Steven, and Christian; a sister, Dolly (Pete) Asterino, and sister-in-law, Joan Cappelletti, along with several nieces and nephews. Josie’s family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at The Heritage and PACE CNY, especially Desta Anthony who took great care of her during the later years of her life. A Funeral Mass in celebration of Josephine’s life will be held at 9:45 am on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at Holy Cross Church, DeWitt, NY, followed by entombment at Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum.
