June 19, 1940 - February 12, 2021
Nancy R. Rossi passed away at her home and with her devoted and loving family on February 12, 2021, at the age of 80. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late Norman and Ann (Joyce) Richards, Mrs. Rossi lived most of her life in Syracuse. She attended school at Most Holy Rosary in Syracuse, and graduated from Le Moyne College in 1961. She earned a Master’s Degree in Physics at Fordham University and then worked as an engineering physicist doing foundational work for tracking systems within the aerospace program. Mrs. Rossi later taught high school math and science at Catholic high schools in Syracuse, and was the first woman to hold a full time teaching position at Christian Brothers Academy. While at CBA, she was introduced to another faculty member, Emil M. Rossi, whom she married three months later and to whom she was unceasingly devoted for fifty-five years. She left the workforce to raise four daughters at home, and as the children grew, she took on community service, in addition to overseeing the administration of her husband’s law practice. Mrs. Rossi was particularly proud of her work as an advocate for parents of children with special learning needs in Syracuse City Schools, her efforts to help establish the Center for the Advancement Values Education at Le Moyne College, and her support of the Syracuse Symphony Association, of which she was a past president. She had a great love of music, instilled by her father, who sang in a barbershop quartet. Mrs. Rossi was a gifted singer and musician herself. She grew up playing the piano, and later sang in the choir at Our Lady of Pompei Church and performed with the Berwald Singers community group. She was very proud to have her family gathered for those performances. Mrs. Rossi was an elegant and beautiful woman, with an exceptional intellect and love of continuous learning. She learned to play the cello later in life, she took additional courses at Le Moyne College in business and astronomy, and she began learning the Irish language. She was an avid reader of books of all kind, she loved to discuss science and politics, and she enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, and knitting. Mrs. Rossi selflessly dedicated her life to her family and was an adoring wife, mother, and grandmother. She cheered every success, nursed every failure, smoothed over disagreements, and prepared magnificent family meals with great love. Her family dinners and family vacations in Cape May, with children and grandchildren talking, laughing, and playing together, were legendary and kept the family close. She delighted in her grandchildren and planned special outings, projects, or gifts with each child in mind. Mrs. Rossi is survived by her husband, Emil M. Rossi, her daughters, Gemma (Andrew) Corbin, Nancy Jo Rossi, Rachel (T.J.) Ricciardiello, and Ann Rossi; her grandchildren, Andrew, Grace, and Natalie Corbin, Anthony, Gemma, and Pia Ricciardiello, and Noble and Meadow Rossi; her sister, Margaret (Robert) Wallace; her brother, John (Diane) Richards; and her sister-in-law, Nicki Richards. She was predeceased by her parents, Norman and Ann Richards, her brother, Edward Richards, her sister, Kathleen White, and her beloved niece, Lisa Efraimson. There will be no calling hours, in consideration of concerns over the COVID pandemic. A Mass of Remembrance for Mrs. Rossi will be held at Our Lady of Pompei Church on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at 1:00 PM. To attend the mass remotely please visit Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter’s Facebook page. There will be a celebration of her life at a date later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Rossi’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research at www.stjude.org/donate or ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38015.
