Anthony V. Napolitano

Anthony V. Napolitano, 98, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 28, 2025, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Syracuse, son of the late Leo and Philomena (Aiello) Napolitano, Anthony was a US Navy Veteran and later went on to become a Police Officer for the City of Syracuse for 37 years, retiring in 1988. Whenever Tony did something he did it for the long haul, 98 years on this earth… married 66 years to Peg, Mom, Nana… 37 years of service to the City of Syracuse as a police officer. What Tony enjoyed most was spending time with his family, his bride, his siblings, cousins, and especially his children and grandchildren. Closing down family picnics, holiday meals and a simple get together was never Tony’s strong suit. He could never understand why everyone had to leave so early, even when it was late! Tony spent many hours with his buddies drinking coffee, playing handball at the downtown YMCA, and collecting antiques which we all called “junk!" Fortunately for everyone, at these gatherings Tony spent a great deal of time taking pictures, and as frustrating as it seemed to strike a pose for Tony, we are all very grateful that he was adamant about getting the picture. We are even more grateful now that we were able to at least get him in a few. Tony’s time on the police force was notable. He spent a good portion of his career directing traffic in downtown Syracuse, Warren & Jefferson was his spot. In 1965 he was commended for his heroic actions in saving several pedestrians during a fatal automobile accident at that corner. One of Tony’s proudest honors during his police service was guarding, soon to be President, John Kennedy during a campaign visit to Syracuse. Tony will be missed greatly by his family and friends, and we ask that you remember his wry smile, his dedication to his job, and his commitment to his family. Along with his parents, Anthony was predeceased by his grandson, Andrew John Cunningham; as well as 9 siblings. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Margaret “Peg” (Kreitzer) Napolitano; his five children, Nancy (Paul) Dugrenier, Donna (Kenny) Sweet, Judy (Tom) Cunningham, John Napolitano, and David (Diana) Napolitano; five grandchildren, Ali, Tommy, Kaitlyn, Stella, and Sabine; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. In keeping with Anthony’s wishes, funeral services will be private. He will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery, Warners. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Syracuse Police Benevolent Association, PO Box 11218, Syracuse, NY 13218.
