Daniel "Donato" Leo Savino

Daniel “Donato” Leo Savino, 96, of North Syracuse, passed away peacefully at home on April 19, 2024. Daniel was a caring husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, coach, teacher, and friend. He was born to the late Josephine (Vaccaro) Savino and Pietro Savino on June 27, 1927, in Syracuse, NY. Dan spent his early years working at Liberty Shoes, his father’s shoe repair store. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After his military service, Dan attended SUNY Oswego's teacher's education program, which began his fulfilling career as a teacher, principal, and beloved coach. In 1954, Dan married the love of his life, Antoinette Lucille Roffo. They were married 69 years. Dan and Toni would go on to have three beautiful daughters, Cynthia, Cheryl, and Lori. Dan and Toni were devoted to their family and spent much time together. Throughout their lives, they traveled to Italy and Hawaii and enjoyed cruises with their friends. Some of Dan’s fondest memories were made at Jamesville Dewitt Middle School. Dan was in education for 38 years. He was so beloved by his students that he had to kick them out of his classroom on the last day of school. Those same students crashed his wedding to witness their favorite teacher getting married. His exemplary service led to Dan being appointed the Principal of Jamesville-Dewitt Junior High School in 1962. He later returned from retirement to be Vice Principal for 6 months. He was also the coach of the JV football and basketball teams, and the head coach of the Varsity baseball team. Dan’s years of service to his community and family continued throughout his life. He was active in his home parish of Blessed Sacrament of Syracuse, and in Church of the Resurrection of our Lord in Fort Myers, Florida where he served as an usher and eucharistic minister. He was involved in many community groups and volunteered as a tax preparer for AARP. He was also in many clubs, The American Legion, The Elks club, The Moose club, and The Knights of Columbus. Dan will be remembered by all who knew him as a patient, kind, and a gentle man. He is and will forever be missed. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by wife, Antoinette Lucille (Roffo) Savino, and his brother, John Savino. Daniel is survived by his daughters, Cindy Donati, Cheryl Savino, and Lori (Jim) Falk; grandchildren, Danielle (Alexander) Belina, Casey Inman, Alexandra Kenyon, Rebecca Kenyon, and Nicole (Luke) Tucci. three great grandchildren, Stella, Savino, and Brooklyn. We would like to thank Lisa Perkins, Patti Carbone, Margaret Nicholson, Inka Brown-Paul, who were his home health aides, and Hospice of CNY (especially Sarah Martell) for the loving care they have given to Dan during these difficult times. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 from 10:00am to 11:30am, immediately followed by a funeral service in celebration of Daniel’s life at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY. He will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum.
