John F. Maggio

John F. Maggio, 95, of Liverpool, passed away at home on December 10, 2024. John was a life resident of Syracuse, son of the late Fred and Vera (Brignole) Maggio. John’s career in the transportation business spanned 6 decades. He worked for Leaseway Transportation for over 30 years, providing delivery and warehouse services for many prestigious companies in Syracuse; including, Carrier, Nestle, Eber Brothers, and Southern Wine and Spirits. John retired for a short time and became the Director of Transportation for General Transportation, where he was the driving force behind the company’s growth to be one of the largest home delivery companies in the United States. He continued to work full time until he was 77 years old. John was a loving father and devoted grandfather to his three granddaughters; he was proudly involved in all their successes. He was a lover of people and friend to all, he made new friends wherever he went and never lost touch with old friends. John’s favorite pastime was going to the casinos, especially the trips he took to Las Vegas, Nevada, with his late wife, Donna. John loved the time he spent in Cape Vincent, NY in his younger years with his parents and family, and later, his wife and his own children. From Syracuse to Saratoga to Key West, everyone who met John said the same thing; “he was a gentleman.” He was respected by all and will be missed. Along with his parents, John was predeceased by his wife, Donna (Koval); his daughter, Laurie Ward; and his brother, Joseph J. Maggio. He is survived by his children, Fred (Lucy) Maggio, Mary Kay Maggio; and Patricia Ranieri; grandchildren, Angeline (Chris) Schreiber, Dominique (Brace) Mullett, and Francesca Ranieri; nieces, Denise Tucci, and Joni (Tom) Sprague; nephews, John Maggio (Mary Kelly), and Joe (Cindy) Maggio; as well as several great nieces, great nephews, cousins, godchildren, and friends. A funeral Mass in celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at 9:30 A.M. in Epiphany Parish (formerly St. Joseph the Worker Church), 1001 Tulip St., Liverpool. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Calling hours will take place on Friday, December 13, 2024, from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd.
