Robert "Bob" James Gentile

Robert "Bob" James Gentile, age 83, of Sarasota, FL passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 26, 2024. He was born in Syracuse, NY to the late James and Carmella (nee Davoli) Gentile. Bob attended Oswego State College for Teaching and continued graduate courses at Syracuse University toward his Master’s Degree in Education and became certified for Elementary Education and Elementary Supervisor. Bob started his teaching career in Franklin Schuyler School District, then moved on to Syracuse City School District where he held a variety of positions as an elementary math teacher, an ombudsperson for Syracuse City School integration program, and a Title One Math Lab teacher. His position took him to many schools in Syracuse. Initially, he was recognized for his problem-solving abilities and elected Treasurer of the Syracuse Teacher Association. Bob kept the budget always balanced and mindful of any increases in dues. His ability to problem solve led him to become part of the negotiating team for the Teachers’ Union, securing contracts with the School District that would further teachers’ health and wellness benefits. He wore many hats and whatever task he was given he completed with dignity and compassion. He fought for everyone’s rights no matter who they were. Even years after he retired, friends would call to ask for assistance in resolving school district problems. They knew he would be a great listener and give an unbiased answer or solution. During the summer months, Bob enjoyed fishing with lifetime friend Stan and family in Canada and when he retired, he shared the time exploring the lakes around Syracuse. Bob enjoyed model trains and going to train shows. Moving to Florida was a dream come true for Bob as he was an aficionado of Disney and Disney World. Living in Florida and obtaining Florida Resident passes made it possible for him to go to Disney World as often as he liked. Once he even made four parks in one day to collect special prints for Florida Residents. Bob discovered that he loved cruising. He sailed Disney thirteen times and explored Alaska on the "Wonder," which was the second time the ship sailed there. Once retired he had the time to relax, do puzzles, and read all the James Patterson books that were ever written. Bob will be remembered in the hearts and minds of his loving family, dear friends and all that he helped during his journey. His humor, philosophy will be long remembered and kept alive in our minds and hearts. Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 23 years, Eleanor Rotheim; daughters, Karen Gentile- Ohrazda (Nick) and Cheryl Gentile, and stepdaughter, Shara Johnson (Edward); his sister, Donna Gentile Varvaglione; five grandchildren, Zachary, Alexander, Matthew, Elizabeth and Sophia; niece, Dolores (Daniel) Engelbrecht; great-nieces, Madison and Kira Macomber, along with several cousins. A gathering of family and friends for Robert will be held Saturday, June 22, 2024, from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM at Robert Toale & Sons Celebration of Life Center, 4310 Solutions Lane, Bradenton, FL 34211. Service will be Livestreamed. The link will be available the day of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Bob's honor may be made to TideWell Hospice, of Lakewood Ranch.
