Norma B. (Schultz) Harer

Norma B. (Schultz) Harer, passed peacefully from this earthly life to her eternal reward on Friday, January 30, 2015, at home, surrounded by her two loving sons who had been her caregivers during the last few years as she struggled valiantly against a long illness. Mom was born on November 2, 1929 in Syracuse, NY, the second of three children of William and Mary Schultz. Her own mother passed when Mom was only 8 years old. Mom attended and graduated from Assumption Academy (salutatorian) in 1947. She attended the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing and received her R.N. in 1950. On February 10, 1951 she married our dear father, Kurt H. Harer, who was the love of her life. With Dad she raised her four children on Lyndon Road in Dewitt. We lived there for 37 years until Mom and Dad decided to move to the family estate in North Constantia in 1989. Mom was a loving wife, a good mother, a gourmet cook and avid gardener. She was a devout and faithful Roman Catholic her whole life and had special devotion to the Blessed Mother. On February 12, 1995, Mom was predeceased suddenly and unexpectedly by her husband of 44 years, our Dad, Kurt H. Harer. She was also predeceased by her brother, Francis Schultz, her sister, Dorothy Hayes, her brother-in-law, Larry Hayes and her son-in-law, Gregory Gardner. She is survived by her children, Rev. Eric K. Harer, a priest of the Diocese of Syracuse, at home, her daughter, Marlene K. Gardner of Dewitt, her son, Kurt V. Harer, at home, and her daughter, Lisa J. Harer de Calvo (Jose) of Landsdowne, PA; her loving grandchildren, Pamela M. Porter (Andy) of NC and James P. Gardner of Dewitt, also several nieces and nephews. Her funeral services were held privately and at the convenience of the family. Private entombment was held in the Mausoleum at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Dewitt. All arrangements were entrusted to the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME in North Syracuse. Our family would like gratefully to acknowledge the loving and kind care which Mom received from Thomas Andrew Hanna, M.D. of Oswego, Felix Oben, M.D. of Oswego, Dignity-Plus of Central Square, NY, Hospice of CNY, and in particular Kelly Bush, LPN.
