We lost a great person on Sunday, August 3rd, 2014. Alberto V. Salomone was a very unique individual, with characteristics including generosity, wit, and a grand sense of humor. Al’s charisma and energy attracted others instantly, making him loved by many.
Alberto was born in Syracuse on November 14, 1944 to the late Elena “Helen” (Saudella) and Albert Salomone. He was a graduate of North High School in 1962 and continued his education at Niagara University, earning a degree in education. He began and ended his career as a business teacher with the Syracuse City School District, retiring from Fowler High School in 2000.
His second family was the Cannatas at Lou’s Care Car in Baldwinsville, where he could be found everyday answering the phones and spreading good will to employees and customers alike. Even in his attempt to retire to Venice, Florida, he acquired yet another close “family,” as he began volunteering for Emillio and Loredana Rossitto and family at Angelo’s Italian market. He immediately gained a legion to new customers and friends.
A renaissance man by nature, he was most passionate about baseball, specifically the New York Yankees, riding Harleys with his beloved friends, music, and old movies. He treasured mementoes, family photos, and of course, new and old cars. Later in life he realized his dream to perform. He acted in community theatre working with the Baldwinsville Theatre Guild in South Pacific, My Fair Lady, and Salt City Playhouse in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, and The Christmas Story.
He was predeceased by his parents, Elena and Albert Salomone, sister Assunta “Susan” and brother in law Vincent Cogliandro. He is survived by his brother Pellegrino “William” and sister in law, Patricia Salomone, along with their four children, William Albert (Maria Jean) Salomone, Maria Salomone (Fiance, Michael Fruscello), Charles “Chaz” Salomone, and Laura (Chuck) Wilbur. Also, the Cogliandro nieces and nephews, Santina Marie (Mark) Bielak, Elena (Dennis), Regin, Dominick (Julie), Cogliandro, Grace Marie (John) Bergemann, Susan Cogliandro Beitz, and Linda (Sergio) Zappala. Additionally, he had twenty-six great nieces and nephews, and 3 great great. Also there a number of first cousins in Italy, London and Scotland. He is also survived by his lifelong friend Kathie McCarthy and her daughter Corey Ranallo, his godchild. We love you and will miss you dearly “Big Al Sal” so “Ride Boldly Ride”… “Baby Doll!”
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 9:00am at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME , followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at in Our Lady of Pompei / St. Peter Church at 10:00 A.M. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. Family and friends may call at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME 3401 Vickery Road North Syracuse (corner of Buckley) on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M.
