Alexander J. Vecchio's Obituary
Alexander J. Vecchio, 90, of Syracuse, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at James Square surrounded by his loving family.
Alex was born on May 17, 1922 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Rosa and Giuseppe Vecchio of Linguaglossa, Sicily. He attended Grant Jr. High School and North High School, and played drums in the Progressive Youth Drum and Bugle Corps. As a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during WWII, he served as an aviation engineer in the Pacific, including Okinawa, Hawaii and Korea. Alex was employed by Precision Castings, Cast-O-Matic, where he was a foreman, and CCBI as the head of maintenance. You could always count on Pop-Pop to fix anything! Alex enjoyed bowling, golfing (he had two holes-in-one), playing cards at the Italian-American Athletic Club, working out at the Pastime Club (until he was 86 years old), and mostly spending time with his family and friends. He was a communicant of St. Daniel’s Church since 1953. Alex’s kindness, friendliness, and positive outlook will be remembered by all who ever met him.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Kathryn Vecchio in 2007 and his brother Sam in 1998. Alex is survived by his daughter, Rosemary (Dr. Ross) Laguzza; stepdaughter, Evelyn (John) Bubb; grandchildren, Kristen (Christopher) Tizzano and Jeffrey (Dorothy) Laguzza; step-grandchildren, Laurie Bubb Scofield, Michele (Bill) Ciamarro; great-grandchildren, Kathryn Laguzza, Benjamin Tizzano and Mae Rose Laguzza; step-great-granddaughter, Amanda (Joshua) Farrar; brother, Anthony Vecchio; sister-in-law, Frances Vecchio along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 9:00 am in the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME and 10:00 am in St. Daniel's Church. Entombment will follow in Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum. Family and friends may call at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
Alex’s family would like to thank the staff at James Square, particularly Units B and 1South. The devoted, caring “angels” of 1South who took care of him for four years preserving his dignity and made him comfortable became family to us. We would also like to thank Dick Marshall, Dad’s caring roommate from the start who watched over him until the end.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Alex’s name can be to Sisters of St. Francis, 1118 Court St., Suite 32, Syracuse, NY 13208 or Francis House, 108 Michaels Avenue, Syracuse NY 13208.
