Dr. Alfonso John Merola III's Obituary
Dr. Alfonso John Merola III (Jay), passed away on October 11, 2012 at the age of 53 at his home in North Syracuse surrounded by his family and friends after battling a long illness. He was born in Syracuse on January 6, 1959 to his parents, A. John Merola, MD and Beverly Merola.
He and his wife Monica were married at Hendrick's Chapel in Syracuse on July 4, 1987. Jay graduated from Syracuse University before completing dental school at Temple University in 1988. Following graduation, he opened North Medical Dentistry at the North Medical Center in Liverpool. He was a member of the NYS Dental Association. Jay was a true family man who led an active life with his children, siblings, nieces and nephews. He had a racer's spirit and was a true thrill seeker. He was an active hunter, fisher and archer and took an active role in teaching his children all that he knew. Jay was present on the sidelines of all his son's football and baseball games and his daughter's cheerleading events. He was an enthusiastic supporter and had a competitive spirit. He loved to travel and spent his vacations in South Florida, 1000 Islands, NY and various alpine locations. Jay had tremendous energy and was usually the center of attention. Jay's family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Joseph's Hospital.
Jay is survived by his wife, Monica Merola; his children, Alfonso John Merola IV, Austin Merola and Desiree Merola; his parents, A. John Merola, MD and Beverly Merola; his siblings, Susan (Mark) Merola-McConn of Fayetteville, David (Victoria) Merola of North Syracuse, Richard (Allison) Merola of Brewerton, Melissa (Richard) Thomson of Alexandria Bay and Jessica (Michael) Johnson of Cazenovia along with several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 am in St. Rose of Lima Church. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Family and friends may call at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation.
