Anthony N. Mattiacio, Jr.'s Obituary
Anthony N. Mattiacio, Jr., 89, known affectionately as Tony or Poppie by friends and family, passed away on June 7, 2024. Born on March 22, 1935, to Antonio and Luisa (Merola) Mattiaccio, Tony was a lifelong resident of Syracuse and currently resided in Liverpool.
In 1959, Tony married his beloved wife, Mary Margaret (Peggy) Hall, and they would have celebrated 65 years this November. Together, they had five children: Louisa Mary Mattiacio (deceased), Karen Ann Labbate, Anthony James Mattiacio (Nancy), Dr. Michael David Mattiacio, and Dr. Brian Louis Mattiacio (Jonelle). Tony was immensely proud of his wife and his children and was very proud of his 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Tony was employed in his early years as a baker and was employed for 30 years by R. E. Dietz and retired from Syracuse University.
Tony was a devout Christian, and he loved the Lord. He could often be found watching his favorite preachers on television and reading his bible daily. Tony’s quiet sense of humor was well known by his family and friends, and they are blessed with so many memories of his words of wisdom.
Sadly, Tony was predeceased by his parents, and his daughter Louisa Mary. His memory will be forever held in the hearts of his surviving family, as well as his brother, Michael, and sister Rose Bonk, and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service in celebration of Tony’s life will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, at 11:30 A.M. in the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Calling hours will take place on Monday, June 10, 2024, from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home, 3401 Vickery Rd. (Corner of Buckley Rd.) N. Syracuse, NY 13212.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to St Jude’s, a charity very dear to Tony’s heart or to the Parkinson’s Foundation in Tony’s honor. Tony struggled with Parkinson’s Disease for the past 10 years, and his family would love to see a cure discovered for this disease.
Poppie will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. His legacy will live on through his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and beyond. All because two people fell in love.
