Anthony J. Meggesto's Obituary
Anthony J. Meggesto, 82, of Baldwinsville, passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He was born in Syracuse to the late Tony and Mary (Martino) Meggesto. Anthony was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He worked for the Syracuse City School District for over 30 years, retiring as Assistant Superintendent. He believed that every child had value. During his career he facilitated the implementation of NAAPID (National African American Parent Involvement Day) and helped to create ways for children with special needs to be involved with youth baseball and to facilitate generating supports for incoming ENL and refugee children.
Throughout Anthony's retirement he continued to help children and families of the Syracuse City School District. He secured funding for youth programs throughout the city and served on the Board of Contact Community Services. He and his wife Margaret loved traveling; they traveled extensively, visiting many countries on four continents and many states within the U.S. Anthony was a loving and spiritual man who believed you should always do the right thing. He loved hosting dinners surrounded by family and will be missed by his entire family. His examples of love and kindness will live on in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Anthony is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Margaret (O’Rourke) Meggesto; his children, Andrea (Eirik) Saether, Matthew Meggesto, and Mary Ellen Meggesto; his 8 grandchildren, Jasmine, Taylor, Darian, Danylah, Dietrick Jr., Jule, Devin and Deacon; his 6 great-grandchildren; his nephew, James Meggesto; his nieces, Nancy (Vincent) Blasio, Mary (Bob) Moreland, and his cousins, Anne Marie (Bill) Ranczuck and Joseph Tirinato.
A funeral Mass in celebration of Anthony’s life will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at 10:00 A.M. at St. Augustine Church, 7333 O'Brien Rd., Baldwinsville. Entombment will follow at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery 8668 County Rte. 57, Baldwinsville. Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 16, 2023, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (Corner of Buckley Rd.) Syracuse, NY 13212.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Anthony’s memory may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
