Anthony Merluzzi's Obituary
Anthony Merluzzi, 92, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully of natural causes on Saturday, January 20, 2024. He was born in Syracuse and was a communicant at Our Lady of Pompei Church and worked as a butcher in his father’s meat market. Anthony was a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps while serving in combat during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, upon returning home, he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Management at Syracuse University.
In subsequent years, he continued his career as a butcher and started his own home repair and remodeling trade. He was also on the 2019 Honor Flight Syracuse. Among his favorite activities were family gatherings, fishing, camping, horseracing, casinos, and a yearly extended stay at Saratoga Springs racetrack.
He was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Teresa (Bersani) Merluzzi, his twin sister, Rita Merluzzi; sisters, Susie Merluzzi, Gina Merluzzi, Mary Bombard, Anna Leo, and Margaret Massaro; his brothers, Paul, Alexander, and Armond Merluzzi.
Also predeceased are his first wife, Joan (Smith) Quackenbush, second wife, Sharon Lee Wade Merluzzi; daughters, Kathleen Ann Merluzzi and Dr. Joanne Sue Merluzzi.
Anthony is survived by his brother, Alfred “Fritzie” Merluzzi; sister-in-law/caregiver, Deborah Wade; son, Anthony (Carolina) Merluzzi; grandsons, Timothy (Tina) Merluzzi and Philip Merluzzi; granddaughter, Dianna Little and great granddaughters, Sophia Merluzzi, (Hannah and Caylee) Little, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2024, from 4:00 to 6:30 PM at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY. A funeral Mass in celebration of Anthony’s life will take place at 10:00 AM on Friday, January 26, 2024, at Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church, 301 Ash St., Syracuse, NY., followed by burial with Military Honors in Assumption Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church Building Fund.
