Benedict Gasser, Jr.'s Obituary
Benedict Gasser, Jr., 75, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 31, 2015 at James Square Health and Rehabilitation Centre. Ben was born on November 15, 1939, the son of the late Benedict Gasser and Mary (Knaus) Gasser. He was raised on Syracuse’s west side, and graduated from St. Brigid’s grade school and St. Patrick’s high school.
He worked for years as produce manager at Loblaws grocery store on the west side and at Bellevue Heights Market. Ben was a hard worker with a strong work ethic, often holding a full time job as well as a part time job. Ben enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served his country for 4 years during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in Newfoundland and California.
Ben joined Crucible Steel Company shortly after his military discharge and was an employee there for over 30 years. He resided on Syracuse’s north side for over 40 years. His many friends recall that upon seeing him, Ben would always have a story to tell.
Ben is survived by his son, Benedict Gasser III of Cleveland, NY, son, Kevin Gasser of Fulton, NY, sister, Eleanor (Gasser) June of Syracuse, brother, William Gasser of Maryland, granddaughter, Jennifer Gasser, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at the Onondaga County Veterans Cemetery at a time to be announced. THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME is handling funeral arrangements.
