Bernard F. McDermott Jr.'s Obituary
Bernard F. McDermott Jr. “Bud” or “Bernie”, 89 of Syracuse passed on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at Upstate Medical University Hospital. A native and life resident of Syracuse, Bud was the son of the late Alice Mary (Resch) and Bernard F. McDermott Sr.
Bud graduated from North High School and after serving in the US Army stationed in the Philippines, he started his career with the City of Syracuse Fire Department. Bud was very involved with the AFL-CIO International Association of Firefighters Local 280. During the 1960s a wave of inner city riots broke out and firefighters were directed to use hoses to control the crowds. Based on strong conviction, Bud and other firefighters stood by their beliefs “We fight fires, NOT PEOPLE” In 1968 Bernard received the valor award. He retired in 1983 after 29 years of service.
Following his retirement he and his wife, Melva found their greatest joy in their grandson, Eric now a biomedical engineering PhD student at the University at Buffalo. Known to many as Papa, Bud enjoyed the company of young people. He loved their energy and enthusiasm for life.
He also loved everything water- fishing, golden retrievers, and especially the family camp on Point Peninsula, NY. Bud was a gifted artist and could draw anything; he was especially fond of Walt Disney characters. In the true spirit of his faith, Bud would help anyone in need. He would swing a hammer to build a house or simply offer small acts of kindness.
In recognition of Bud’s struggle with many health challenges we would like to acknowledge and offer a special thanks to Dr. David B. Duggan, Dr. Robert L. Carhart Jr., and Dr. Edward Choung.
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Melvina M. (French) McDermott. Daughter, Kathleen M. (Don Mace) McDermott of Syracuse; son Patrick K. (Julie) McDermott of Watertown; and grandson Eric P. (Ariana Louise) McDermott of Buffalo. Three siblings, Alice (Thomas) Costello, John (Patti) McDermott and Marilyn Sheatz. He was predeceased by one sister, June Cecil and two brothers Robert and Patrick McDermott. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 10th, 2017 at the Franciscan Church of the Assumption, 812 North Salina Street Syracuse from 10:30 am to 11:30 am, followed by a funeral Mass in Bernard’s name at Noon. Burial will take place at a later date.
