Bernice (Malinowski) Calabria's Obituary
Bernice (Malinowski) Calabria, 83, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on December 31, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Chicago, IL to the late Peter and Angela (Daniel) Malinowski, she was a graduate of Providence Catholic High School in Chicago. Upon graduation, she accepted a position where she became a programmer of one of the earliest computers. After marrying her husband Dominick, Bernice then moved to Syracuse and was the office manager for her husband’s company, Buz Electric. Later, she was employed by the Syracuse City School District for over 30 years. Bernice was a longtime communicant of Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church and former chairperson of the Election Day Spaghetti Supper as well as past president of the Mothers Club. She enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and outings with her friends. She was also an avid SU football fan and had season tickets for many years.
Family was most important to Bernice, and she loved spending time with them, especially her seven grandchildren and her great-grandson. She never missed a sporting event, band concert, or any other event involving her grandchildren. Bernice took great joy in hosting Sunday dinners and birthday parties for her beloved family, creating warm and memorable moments that brought everyone together.
Bernice was predeceased by her beloved husband Dominick, who she married in 1962. They were married for over 30 years. She was also predeceased by her parents and brothers, Casey, Leonard, and Ed Malinowski.
Bernice is survived by her four children, Dominick (Lisa) Calabria, Donna (Kevin) Newman, Carol (Matthew) Teixeira, and Caryn (Timothy) Ellis; seven grandchildren, Christopher (Vera) Newman, Dominick (Hannah) Calabria, Justin Newman, Daniel Calabria, Michael and Ashley Teixeira, and Nathan Ellis; a great-grandson, Vincent Newman; sister-in-law, Janet D’Addario; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral service in celebration of Bernice’s life will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024, at 9:30 A.M. in the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M. at Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church, 301 Ash St., Syracuse. Bernice will be laid to rest beside her husband in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dewitt. Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 4, 2024, from 4:00 – 6:00 P.M. at the funeral home, 3401 Vickery Rd. (Corner of Buckley Rd.) N. Syracuse, NY 13212.
