Here are some of my memories of knowing and loving Candy for over 46 years: riding with me to visit my parents in NJ where she saw the Atlantic Ocean for the first time. Candy just standing there wide-eyed staring at the blue ocean and crashing waves with toes in the sand. Walking the Asbury Park boardwalk, seeing Bruce Springsteen’s Stone Pony lounge; memories-singing in the car at the top of our lungs; Della Reese’s “Don’t You Know”; John Denver’s “Country Roads”, “Rocky Mountain High”, Stones “Satisfaction” and so many more; playing with my black Lab “Nite’, making BLT’s with Miracle Whip for her, Steak or Burgers with fries at Steinhoff’s in Wilmington, NY after playing pool and Betty Boop 10¢ a game pin ball machine; making & sending Candied Walnuts (aka bird turds) for her every January for almost 40 years.
We met in 1974 at the W. Alton Jones Cell Science Center forming a life-long friendship…so many memories of her views on ‘white coats’ and her personal definition of Ph.D.’s (best not to ask). When I relocated, we spoke by the phone from Corning, NY; Royal Oak, MI (she came to our wedding October 6, 1990); Melbourne Beach, FL (my parents retirement spot); Melbourne, Australia (where John, my husband, and I worked for almost 3 years) and finally Rockbridge Baths, VA (my present home).
Candy was a unique friend: honest, kind, compassionate, caring, fun-loving, playful, adventurous, protective, trustworthy, nurturing, a great listener, helpful and she was clairvoyant…knowing what you were thinking at the same time as you.
Candy was definitely one-of-a-kind; God broke the mold when He made her. To say she will be greatly missed is an understatement. Rest in peace my best friend Candy Jones.
