Carmela M. (Toscano) Barbagallo's Obituary
Carmela M. (Toscano) Barbagallo, 98, a life resident of Syracuse, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, May 2, 2024 at St. Camillus Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Syracuse to the late John and Josephine Toscano and was a graduate of Blessed Sacrament School, where she won a silver medal for penmanship in a state-wide contest. She also graduated from St. John’s Catholic Academy and attended CCBI. Carmela retired as a secretary for the Syracuse City School District after many dedicated years.
Carmela was a devoted communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church and took a lot of pride in decorating for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, she also made several banners and altar clothes. She was a Eucharistic Minister, Minister of Care, a former officer of the Altar and Rosary Society, a past president of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary Council #5398, and a member of the St. Daniel Wisdom People and the Italian American Heritage Association. In 1995, she was voted Lady of the Year and in 1997 she was Mrs. Senior Eastwood of the Columbus Day Parade. Musically gifted, Carmela was a choir member for over 60 years, singing as a soloist for countless funerals and weddings. In 2013, she earned the Immaculata Award from Bishop Cunningham, honoring her for her ministries and dedication to her parish.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Anthony, in 2000 and her sisters, Verena Leonardo and Rose Lopez.
Carmela is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Cathy Barbagallo; her grandchildren, Jessica and Ryan; a special family, Philamena McBride, Maria, and Angela; along with several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 11:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. (noon) followed by a funeral service in celebration of Carmela’s life at 12:00 P.M. (noon) at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse. Entombment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeWitt.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Carmela’s name may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church, 3127 James St. Syracuse, NY 13206.
