Carmella R. (Cutri) Vercillo, 87, a life resident of Syracuse, passed away Friday, September 19th at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born to the late James and Carmella (Fidele) Cutri and grew up on the East Side. She was the 5th of 14 children (10 sons and 4 daughters). Carmella retired from Syracuse China after 20 years of service. She was an active Poker Player with three Vercillo Sisters-in-law: Rita, Toni, and Louise Vercillo and her niece Tessie Pitonzo. She loved going to the horseraces and the casino. Mel was the “Icon” of the Vercillo’s on Ash St. She was the best babysitter for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was “Ma V.” to all of them. She was known for her world famous Banana Bread. She loved her family dearly and taught all of them how to Love and Laugh. Mel’s family would like to especially thank her close friends and neighbors, Mike and Mary Fonak for their special care and help, and the nurses from Hospice for their comfort and care.
She is predeceased by her loving husband of 42 years Harry who died in 1987, her grandson Nicholas John Hartman who died in 2007, her brothers: Carmen, Frank, Vince, Guidoni “Wee Wee”, Joe and Albert and her sister Mary (Ted) Del Guidice.
Carmella is survived by 3 children: Henrietta “Hens” (Ron) Pierce, Frank “Cheech” (Annette) Vercillo and Annette “Nettie” (Mark) Hartman. 4 Grandsons, 3 Granddaughters, 17 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren, 4 brothers: Sam (Madeline) Cutri, Orlando “Landy” Cutri, Duca Cutri, and Anthony Cutri, 2 sisters: Rose(Joe) Scalisi , Helen (Rocky) Barbato and sister-in-law Maryann Cutri, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 9:00 AM on Tuesday at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, followed by a funeral mass in celebration of Carmella’s life at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday at the funeral home, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse.
