Clara (Emmediato) Hanley's Obituary
Clara Hanley (Emmediato) of Dewitt, NY went to be with the Lord in the early morning hours on November 23, 2021. She died suddenly at home in the arms of her husband and childhood sweetheart Raymond, which was fitting as they were married 76 years but were together 83 years going back to their teenage years living on the same block on Spring St. on Syracuse’s Northside.
Clara graduated from North High School and retired from the City of Syracuse Police Department where she provided clerical support for the Division of Organized Crime. Clara was a devoted communicant of Abundant Life Christian Center. She was also a member of Friends Fellowship 50+ at the Life Church. She was a member of the Daughters of Columbus, the American Italian Heritage Association, past president of the Mother’s Club of Our Lady of Pompei School, former member of the St. Therese Society, Nippon Club, and Dewitt Historical Society.
Clara and Ray loved to dance, going back to winning a dance contest on their honeymoon in NYC while Ray was on leave from the Navy. They were members of the Lamp Lighters and Top Hatters Dance Clubs and were lifelong travelers travelling extensively throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Clara had a deep appreciation for the arts and was a gourmet cook. She had a keen sense of style and was quiet, cordial and always ready with an encouraging word for strangers and friends alike. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Clara was predeceased by her son, Thomas M. Hanley, her parents, Amalia Fortino and Samuel Emmediato, and her sisters, Edith Fiori, Norma DeGregorio, and Fannie Barber.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Maureen Hanley and Kathleen Hanley-Burns; grandchildren, Lauren Hanley, Lindsay (Mark) Gauthier, Matthew Burns; her sister, Gilda DiCaprio, and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call on Saturday, November 27, 2021 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm, immediately followed by a funeral service at 1:30 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Road (corner of Buckley Road) in North Syracuse. Private burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
