Clara Mariah (Poteat) Ferguson's Obituary
Clara Mariah (Poteat) Ferguson, 95, answered her heavenly call on Monday, November 27, 2017 on a beautiful sunny morning. She was born July 20, 1922 to the late John and Hattie Mitchell Poteat in North Carolina.
It was during Clara’s younger years she met, fell in love and married the late James David Ferguson. Their marriage was devoted and shared for 39 years until the untimely death of her husband.
Clara was one of the first black owners of a variety store called “Roundup” located in the Bronx for twenty years. She was incredibly bright, compassionate and a whiz with numbers. Immediately recognizable by her gorgeous smile, fiery-red hair and effervescent spirit that just lit up a room. Everyone who knows her knew the generosity of her heart.
Recently, she moved from the Bronx to Syracuse to live with her daughter where she attended All Saints Church and during the week participated in the PACE Program. Her enjoyment was always being around her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and hanging out with friends and family- however she felt very passionate about her coloring.
Clara was predeceased by her husband, James; son, Calvin David; grandchild, Christopher; five sisters and four brothers.
Survivors to reminisce, reflect and cherish her memories are daughter, Rita Alecia Ferguson of Bronx, NY; daughter-in-law, Gina Ferguson of Dobbs Ferry, NY; son, Demetrius (Aida) Ferguson of Yorktown, NY; daughter, Sherry Washington of Providence, RI; daughter, Schaelon (Matthew) Davis of Syracuse, NY; brother, James Poteat of Ardmore, OK; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Clara’s spirit and smile made everyone realize that she wanted them to be strong and live (not just survive). But above all, she was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and sister who left us with many memories that we will cherish forever. Clara will be missed immensely.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, December 4, 2017 from 10 – 11 am at All Saints Church, 1340 Lancaster Ave., Syracuse, followed by a Funeral Mass in celebration of Clara’s life at 11 am. Burial will be in Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY at a later date. Funeral arrangements entrusted to THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME.
In lieu of flowers, Clara wishes that any contributions be made to Shades of Inspiration Inc., P.O. Box 265, Syracuse, NY 13214-0265 or PACE, 115 Creek Circle, East Syracuse, NY 13057.
