Daniel J. "Mac" MacDonald's Obituary
Born 87 years ago in Boston, Massachusetts, Dan began his heavenly journey from the Syracuse VA Hospital on Friday, April 15, 2016 and WB2EAK is now a “Silent Key”. During the Korean War, he served in the Air Force and was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base and Griffiss Air Force Base. He was employed for over 30 years with the Federal Government, working at the GE plants and the federal building.
His volunteer efforts included teaching amateur radio (Morse code) at Eastwood High School, working with Boy Scouts in both Minoa and Lyncourt, coaching Little League in Lyncourt, volunteering at St. Daniel’s Church and volunteering with bingo for the handicapped at the IACC in Syracuse. He was also president of Little League in Lyncourt and the Men’s Club at CBA.
He was predeceased by his infant son, David; brother, Gene, and sisters, Terri Callahan, Evie Reynolds and Joan Drew.
Surviving are his loving wife of 62 ½ years, Gilda (Matrone) MacDonald; five children, James (Vicki) of CO, John of NY, Mary Jackson (Carlton) of NY, Carol Hunter (Jesse) of NY, and Donna Mercier (John) of AZ; grandchildren, Melissa Mercier of AZ; Rebecca, Christina and Jay Hunter of NY; brothers, John, Ray and Richard, and brothers in-law, Richard Reynolds and Al Drew, all of MA; sisters, Patti Trainer, Peggy Yered and Anne Marie Kennedy, and sister in-law, Phyllis MacDonald, all of MA; 45 nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and nephews, and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Funeral Mass in celebration of Daniel’s life at 12:10 pm in St. Daniel’s Church. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at the funeral home, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Daniel’s honor may be made to St. Daniel’s Church, 3004 Court St, Syracuse, NY 13208 or the Syracuse VA Hospital, 800 Irving Ave, Syracuse, NY 13210.
