David J. "Dave" Hess II's Obituary
David J. “Dave” Hess II, 58, of Clay, passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, after a courageous battle with brain cancer. As he would say, he lived well past his expiration date.
Dave was born and raised in Syracuse and graduated from Niagara University in 1990. Dave was a beloved member of the Clay community and devoted more than three decades to National Grid (formerly Niagara Mohawk), retiring in 2022. Dave’s commitment to public service was evident in his many roles within the Town of Clay, most recently as a respected member of the Town Board, where he demonstrated leadership, compassion, and an unwavering sense of civic responsibility. His contributions touched countless lives, leaving a lasting impact on his colleagues, customers, and the town he so deeply loved.
Known for his lively nature, Dave was truly a friend to all. His larger-than-life presence could light up any room, bringing comfort and joy wherever he went. Above all, Dave was a devoted family man whose greatest happiness came from time spent with his “beautiful bride” and his “favorite son/favorite daughter.”
His love and guidance will live on in the hearts of those he loved most.
Dave’s strength, kindness, infectious humor, and unforgettable laugh will be deeply missed but will remain forever present in the stories and memories shared by his family and friends.
Dave was predeceased by his parents, David and Mary Ellen (Terry) Hess; and his in-laws, Carl and Mary Ann Dobe.
Dave is survived by his loving wife, Kristin Hess; their children, David Hess and Kelsey Hess (Ryan Linnertz). Dave is also survived by his siblings, Terry (Brian) Haug, Kim (Pete) Di Francisco, Cindy (Bob) Hess-Berry, Sheila Hess, and Janis Happick; his aunt, Maxine Dobe, and the entirety of Kristin’s family, whom Dave embraced as his own.
He is also survived by his enormous circle of friends, we wish we could name everyone but know how much your love and support meant to him and his entire family.
