Dean E. Overend

Dean E. Overend, 65, of Marcellus, passed away on July 6, 2021. Throughout his life, Dean loved competing, whether it was football, golf, basketball, or trivia, he always played to win. He fought the final game in his life, Early Onset Alzheimer’s, with superhuman strength and determination but just couldn’t win against this cruel terminal disease. Born on April 11, 1956, Dean was the youngest son of Helen (Mercurio) and Thomas Overend. He grew up on the North Side of Syracuse, graduated from Henninger High School in 1974 and from SUNY Cortland in 1979. While at Henninger, he was an outstanding football player and was named to the All-CNY football team. Dean started his 35-year career as a physical education teacher in the Syracuse City School District and retired after 28 years at Central Square Central Schools. Teaching and coaching were his passions. Dean coached a variety of sports including football, lacrosse, track and field at Fowler, Westhill and Central Square. He enjoyed seeing his athletes master the skills for each sport and he had high expectations for them to work as hard as he did. Dean was inducted into the Central Square Athletic Wall of Fame in 2019. Dean was an avid hunter and a member of the Shawler Brook Sportsmen’s Club. He enjoyed golf, fishing, woodworking, and anything Disney. He enjoyed helping family and friends with any kind of household projects and problems. Dean volunteered for Special Olympics and spent many years on the New York State coaches’ training committee. In addition to his parents, Dean was predeceased by his brothers, Ernie Overend and Mark Overend. The most important thing to Dean was his family. He will be missed by his wife of 39 years, Jeanne (Terrillion) Overend and his daughter and son-in-law, Allyson and Joshua Schneider. The most special people in his life who always made him smile are his grandchildren: Brynn, Will, Hannah and Olivia Schneider. He also leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Lorraine Overend, sister-in-law, Nancy Overend, and in-laws, Cindy and Pete Ames and Jeff and Sue Terrillion. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Calling hours will be held on Friday, July 9, 2021 from 11am to 1pm, followed by a Funeral service at 1pm at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY. A celebration of Dean’s life will continue from 3 pm until ? at Jeanne and Dean’s home in Marcellus. Even if you are unable to attend the services, we want you to join family and friends for the celebration. Instead of flowers, we would like friends and family to write a story or memory about Dean to place in our memory box at his services or at the Celebration of Life. Flowers wilt, but those memories will last forever. In Dean’s memory, please help someone build or fix something, share some knowledge, give somebody a bearhug, or have fun playing a game.
