Donald "Donny" Vassallo's Obituary
Donald “Donny” Vassallo, 81, of Syracuse, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016 at Upstate University Hospital. He was born in Syracuse, son of the late Joseph and Rose (Nuzzo) Vassallo. Donny served in the National Guard for 9 years. He enjoyed working, cooking and eating. Donny was the owner and operator of many restaurants including The Courthouse Restaurant and The Lunch Box in the Regency. In addition he was a chef at several local Syracuse restaurants throughout the years including Avicolli’s, where he retired from in 2014. Donny was also an avid sports fan; he enjoyed watching the NY Giants and NY Yankees.
He was predeceased by two children, Jackie Vassallo and Donald Vassallo, and his brother, Joseph “Sonny” Vassallo.
Donny is survived by his wife of 18 years, Therese “Terry” Vassallo; four children, Joseph (Angleen) Vassallo, Marion Vassallo, Rosella Vanderhaden, all of Liverpool, and Dannielle (Don) Simiele of N. Syracuse; 10 grandchildren, Jackie Lynn, Erika, Annee, Tarry, Marie, Zachary, Grace, Noah, Sarah, and Greyson; 2 great-grandchildren; his sister, Shirley (Joseph) Scripa of Syracuse; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Dean; sisters-in-law, Anita Vassallo, and Cindy Price of Syracuse, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, January 2, 2017 from 4:00 – 6:30 PM, followed by a funeral service in celebration of Donny’s life at 6:30 PM in the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
