Doris (Darminio) Pirro

Doris (Darminio) Pirro, 78, passed away peacefully on November 20, 2022, at St. Joseph’s Hospital with her husband, daughter, and son by her side. She was born in Syracuse on October 31, 1944, to the late Benjamin and Connie (Detran) Darminio. Her heart was broken at a young age after losing her mother before she got married, then just 5 years later, losing her father on the year her first child was born. Doris graduated from North High School and Onondaga Community College to become a licensed dental hygienist. She served in the Peace Corps with her best friend, the late Bonnie Cifaretta, serving together in Iran, Switzerland, and Turkey. After marrying Tom in 1969, she gained new parents in Joe and Rose Pirro and became a stay-at-home mom raising her family, with a husband whose job was 7 days a week. In 1998, Doris and her family founded Winter Harbor Marina, which became the largest indoor heated boat storage facility and refit center in New York State. Doris enjoyed her many summers on the boat with her harbor family at Lakeshore Yacht & Country Club; especially the Saturday nights in the Oak Room and trivia at the campfires. She loved being at their camp near Southwick Beach. She enjoyed fishing, both in the 1000 Islands and South Florida. Doris enjoyed wintering in Florida with her many friends, whether it was having lunch or an afternoon cocktail outside by the water. She was a car enthusiast ordering one of the first all-electric vehicles. Doris enjoyed golf; playing, watching and talking about the game, especially her favorite player, Tiger Woods. Her beloved New York Yankees were always a topic with her friends and family each night throughout the baseball season. Doris was very proud of her garden and enjoyed tending to this throughout the spring and summer. Doris was happiest when she was with her grandsons, whom she adored. They adored her and loved to be with her any chance they could. Doris is survived by her loving, caring, and selfless husband of over 53 years, Thomas J. Pirro, Sr.; her 2 children, Elaina A. (John) Pirro-Lombardi, and Thomas J. (Marlyse) Pirro, Jr.; 3 grandsons, Thomas J. (Jennifer) Pirro III, Patsy M. “Mickey” Pirro, and Augustino L. “Gus” Lombardi; 2 siblings, Marlene Kelly, and Michael (Mary Fran) Darminio; brother-in-law, Donald (Maria) Pirro; sister-in-law, Karen Pirro; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and her beloved dog, Scupper, who never left her side. Family and friends are invited to a Funeral Mass in celebration of Doris’ life on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church, 301 Ash St., Syracuse. Private entombment will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum. Calling hours will be held on Friday, November 25, 2022, from 2:00 – 5:00 pm at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (Corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY 13212. The family would like to thank Meredith Price and all the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital, including Dr. Ryder in the ER and the staff on MSICU 3 West, especially Nicole and Claire for their very personal and loving care.
