Edward S. "Ed" Banick's Obituary
Edward S. "Ed" Banick, 98, of Syracuse, NY, passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2026.
Ed was born December 16, 1927, in Dunmore, PA, to Anna (Hurney) Banick and John A. Banick. He graduated from Dunmore High School and Scranton Technical Institute. Ed served his country in the United States Navy during World War Il and later during the Korean conflict.
On October 20, 1956, Ed married his love Louise (Stoko) Banick in Scranton, PA. The young couple settled in Syracuse, where Ed would make his home for the next 70 years. He and Louise were devoted to each other until her passing in September 2019.
Ed spent his career with the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1985. He devoted many hours to the National Association of Letter Carriers Union, serving as Secretary and later President for two decades, and was recognized this May for an incredible 70 years of union membership.
Once he and Louise landed in Syracuse, Orange athletics won him over. The two of them held season tickets for SU football and basketball for many years. But his first sports love was baseball. He spent years umpiring U-18 youth games and coaching and managing young players who came through the program.
He also loved a good round of golf, a night of bowling, belonging to leagues in both for many years. Family camping trips were a summer staple for years, and once the kids were grown, Ed and Louise made up for lost time by traveling the world together. Ed had endless curiosity and read constantly. Ask him almost anything and he'd have an opinion, a story, or both.
Ed is survived by his three children: daughter Michele Banik-Rake (James O'Connell); daughter Cynthia (Steven) Gilkey; and son Edward Banick II (Donna Gardner); 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; his brother Eugene (Pat) Banick; and many nieces and nephews.
A public viewing will be held Friday, July 10, 2026, from 9:15 - 9:45 AM, followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 AM, at Epiphany Parish, 1001 Tulip St, Liverpool, NY. Ed will be laid to rest at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Moscow, PA, alongside his parents and his beloved wife, Louise.
