Edwin Raymond Whitney 's Obituary
Edwin Raymond Whitney, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday at home. He was born in Syracuse, son of the late Gerald and Rosemary (Deroshia) Whitney. Ed joined the Army after high school, and after finishing basic training was sent to Korea. During combat in Korea, Ed was shot in the knee by the enemy. He received the Purple Heart Medal. He continued his career with the Army, serving two tours during the Vietnam War. Ed retired after twenty-one years of honorable service.
During his military career he served at posts around the world including Turkey, Japan, where he tried climbing Mt. Fuji, Savannah, GA, where he taught ROTC and Germany, where he met the love of his life and proposed to her on their second date.
Upon returning home, he was employed at Gaylord Brothers in Liverpool for more than twenty years before retiring. He spent many hours with his fellow veterans, regularly visiting other veterans in the hospitals on holidays. He was a member of Mattydale American Legion Post 1832, and past commander of Liverpool American Legion Post 188 as well as Past County Commander for Onondaga County. He was also a member of the VFW, the Korean War Vets, the Vietnam War Vets and the DAV. He was a devoted fan of the NY Yankees, Giants and SU sports.
Ed was predeceased by his beloved wife of fifty years, Rosalie (Sprott) Whitney on July 22, 2017.
He is survived by his two daughters, Marion Waddell and Sandra Whitney; grandchildren, Natasha Trammell and Andrew Johnson; his sister, Patricia Laflair; along with many nieces and nephews. He loved his family and friends with his whole heart and never hesitated to tell them he loved them.
A calling hour will be held on Friday, November 29, 2019 from 10 to 11 am, followed by a funeral service at 11 am at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse. Burial with military honors will be on Monday, December 2, 2019 at 11 am at Onondaga County Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
