Eve M. (Vecchio) McGarry 's Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of Eve M. (Vecchio) McGarry announces her passing after a brief illness, on Friday, September 15, 2017, at the age of 86. Born on June 4, 1931, in Syracuse, NY, she was the daughter of the late Salvatore and Ida (DiMauro) Vecchio.
She was predeceased by her husband, James P. McGarry, Sr., her brother, Tony Vecchio; her sister, Carmella Balduzzi, and sister-in-law, Betty McHale.
Eve is survived by her son, James McGarry, Jr. of Syracuse; her daughter, Cindy McGarry Abess, and her son-in-law, Dr. Gerard Abess; two grandsons, Connor and Evan Abess, all of Glens Falls, NY; her sister-in-law, Lucy Vecchio of Syracuse, and brother-in-law, Frank Balduzzi of Syracuse, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Eve was a graduate of the class of 1949 from Assumption High School in Syracuse, NY. After graduation she worked for Dey Brother’s Dept. Store and National Grange Insurance Co. She was a member of the San Egidio Abate Society Auxiliary serving as President for many years.
She married James P. McGarry, Sr. on August 20, 1955. They were married for 44 years until his death on February 16, 2000. Eve devoted her life to her husband, children and grandchildren. She was the Matriarch of the family and the glue that kept us all together.
Eve was a devout Catholic who said her Novena Prayers daily. She loved to cook big meals and feed all who walked through her door. Everyone that knew her loved her positive attitude towards life. Her kindness for others and generosity was larger than life itself. She was a great listener and made everyone feel special.
She will be dearly missed by many.
The family would like to thank Fort Hudson Nursing Center for their outstanding care of Eve in the last days of her life.
Family and friends may call from 9:00 – 10:00 am on Saturday, October 7, 2017 at Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church, 301 Ash St., Syracuse, followed by a Funeral Mass in celebration of Eve’s life at 10 am.
