Filippo "Philip" Zanghi's Obituary
Filippo “Philip” Zanghi, 89, of Liverpool, NY, passed away Sunday, September 6, 2020 in Tampa, Florida. He was born in Rodi, Sicily, Italy, son of the late Giuseppe and Antonina Zanghi. Filippo waited six arduous years to join his childhood sweetheart Carmela in America in 1961. Trained as a barber in Sicily, he went to work upon his arrival then in short time “took a chance” and opened his own shop in Galeville where he would be known as Phil the Barber for 41 years. He was a student of his craft, always willing to teach the finer techniques of cutting. Thrust at an early age to manage the family land and orchards, he never lost sight of the importance of education and hard work, qualities he instilled in his family. He was always thoughtful and contemplative but surprised everyone when he rendered his creativity into artwork in his final years.
Filippo was predeceased by his love and wife of 57 years, Carmela (Imbesi) Zanghi and his brothers, Giovanni Zanghi and Rosario Zanghi.
He was cared for to his final resting by his three loving and devoted sons and their admiring families, Joseph and Catherine Zanghi and granddaughter Monica; Fortunato and Maria Zanghi and grandsons Alessandro and Marco; and Philip and Dawn Zanghi, grandsons Ryan, Jacob and great-grandson Beau. His loving Imbesi, Boncaldo and Zanghi families profoundly remember him. A special thanks to Nani and Isabel for their faithful caregiving, sustaining his dignified life until the end.
A Funeral Mass in celebration of Filippo’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, September 21, 2020 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Liverpool. Entombment will follow in the Assumption Cemetery Family Mausoleum. Family and friends may call from 3:00 – 5:00 PM on Sunday, September 20, 2020 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
