Frederick L. Zimmerman III's Obituary
Frederick Louis Zimmerman III, a proud United States Marine Corps Veteran passed away on April 15, 2026, at the age of 85 in Syracuse, NY surrounded by his loving family.
Born on December 1, 1940, in Chattanooga, TN to Federick L. Zimmerman II and Dorothy Preston, Frederick grew up with a deep sense of duty and patriotism. At the age of 18 he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. During his service he attained the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Following his honorable discharge, Frederick then served with the Marine Corps Reserve for many years. During this time, he was also employed at WSYR TV station as a production coordinator.
He lived with grit in his bones and salt in his blood- a Marine through and through. From the day he earned his title, it was never something he simply did; it was who he was. Those who knew him understood that beneath his tough exterior was a man guided by unwavering principles and a deep sense of duties- to his country, fellow Marines, and above all, his family. If service defined his strength, his family defined his heart.
Along with his parents, Frederick was predeceased by his daughter, Nicolle Zimmerman DeMarco.
He is survived by the love of his life, Dorothy (Pappas) Zimmerman; his children, Katherine Walsh and Jo-Anne (Anthony) Cacchione; his grandchildren Christopher (Emily) Walsh, Nicholas (Morgan) Walsh, Anthony Cacchione and Danielle Cacchione; and the apples of his eye, his great grandchildren, Juliana Walsh and Theodore James Walsh.
Calling hours will be held from 9:30 am - 10:45 am on Monday, April 20, 2026 at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church, 325 Waring Rd., Syracuse, NY, followed by a funeral service in celebration of Frederick’s life at 11:00 am at the church. He will be laid to rest with Military Honors in Oakwood Cemetery.
