Fredrick G. Mathis Jr.'s Obituary
Frederick G. Mathis Jr., a beloved son, brother, uncle, cat dad, and friend, passed away on August 5, 2025, at the age of 95. Born in Syracuse, New York, on November 8, 1929, Fred was the cherished son of Edna Viola (Twilliger) Russo and Frederick Mathis Sr.
A proud veteran, Fred served in the United States Army during the Korean War. Though stationed in Germany, his service was marked by unwavering dedication, quiet courage, and deep patriotism.
After his military service, Fred returned to Syracuse, where he built a long and steady career. He worked at Will & Baumer, followed by many years at Carrier Corporation.
After his retirement, Fred brought his lifelong love of automobiles to life by working at the Syracuse Car Auction House—surrounded by the machines he admired and the people who shared his passion.
Fred's love of cars was matched only by his love of nature. He found joy and serenity at his camp along the St. Lawrence River, a place that became a sanctuary for him and a treasured gathering spot for friends and family. An avid outdoorsman, Fred enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, golfing, and traveling—always drawn to the quiet beauty of the world around him.
In retirement, Fred stayed active and connected to the things he loved most. Whether caring for his cats, taking day trips, or simply sitting by the river, he found peace in life’s small pleasures. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, dry wit, humble nature, and the steadfast love he gave to those lucky enough to know him.
Fred was predeceased by his older sister, Myrle M. Mathis, and by the love of his life, Terry Morgan. He is survived by Susan Russo, Ida Delpha, his niece Theresa Bütler, and great-nephews Gabriel Bütler and Nicolas Bütler.
The burial will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery with only close family in attendance. There will be no calling hours.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME.
Fred lived a full life with quiet strength, integrity, and warmth. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
