Genevieve M. (Sindoni) Vavonese's Obituary
Genevieve M. (Sindoni) Vavonese, 92, passed away on April 14, 2012 which was the 67th anniversary of her marriage to her beloved husband Frank. She was the co-owner of Giant Foods Stores in Syracuse and Bridgeport for forty years.
Gen loved cooking and baking for her family, especially for the holidays. As her family grew, she delighted in attending her grandchildren’s various activities and events. Gen’s high energy personality was channeled towards many organizations. She was a lifetime communicant of Our Lady of Pompei Church where she served as president of the St. Therese Society, a member of the parish council, a Eucharist Minister and long-time volunteer for the Election Day Spaghetti Supper.
Gen is a past officer of the Christian Brothers Academy Mothers’ Club, a member of Our Lady of Pompei school mother's club, a founding member of the Sedgwick Neighborhood Rosary Group, a member of the Italian-American Heritage Club, Columbiettes, and senior citizens groups at Our Lady of Pompei and Holy Trinity churches and McChesney Park. In addition, she was a member of the Sindoni-Mento-Zeppetello Cousins’ club which consisted of her maternal cousins who met monthly for more than forty years. She volunteered at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center for 22 years where she earned a 1000 hour pin.
Gen was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph Sindoni and Paul Sindoni and sisters, Josephine Nicoletti and Angeline Lamanna.
Genevieve is survived by her loving husband, Frank C. Vavonese and four sons, Rev. Charles S. Vavonese of Dewitt, Frank J. (Donna) Vavonese of Bridgeport, Stephen P. (Pamela) Vavonese of Chaumont, NY and Michael J. (Betsy) Vavonese of Syracuse. Also surviving her are nine grandchildren: Frank (Jamie) Vavonese, Robert (Lisa) Vavonese, Stephanie Vavonese, Paul Vavonese, Christopher (Jennifer) Scott, Stephanie Scott, Patrick (Brittany) Hampel, Michael Vavonese and Matthew Vavonese; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Tina Sindoni and Antoinette Pitonzo, both of Syracuse; sisters–in-law, Sue Sindoni, Anna Kubacki, Virginia McBride and Rita Vavonese; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank the staff of Menorah Park for their compassionate care and encouragement during her stay there.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:45 AM Wednesday in the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd, N. Syracuse (Corner of Buckley Rd.) and 10:00 A.M. in Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church. Burial will follow in Assumption Cemetery. Family and friends may call at Our Lady of Pompei Church (301 Ash St.) on Tuesday from 4 to 7 P.M.
