Gertrude M. (Gerwitz) Borer's Obituary
Gertrude M. (Gerwitz) Borer, 91, formerly of Freedom, NY, currently of Syracuse, passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013 at home with her loving family by her side. She was born in Springville, NY, the oldest of ten siblings of Charles and Lugarda (Benz) Gerwitz. Gertrude grew up in West Valley, NY and she and her husband raised their family in Freedom, NY. Gertrude graduated from Mercy College of Nursing in Buffalo and was a registered nurse. She was an artist and had a true passion for painting. Gertrude was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church and a member of the Legion of Mary. She hand-made over 7000 rosaries throughout her life for missions in many countries.
She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Arnold Borer, Ph.D. in 1989 and 5 brothers, Richard, Charles, Cyril, Roger and Howard Gerwitz. Gertrude is survived by her 12 children, Cyril (Nancy) Borer of Allegany, NY, Francis (Patricia) Borer of Jamesville, Thomas (Julie Grover) Borer of Portageville, NY, Mary Ann Mallery of Vestal, NY, James (Lucille) Borer of Middletown, NY, Mary Agnes (Warren) Wykstra of Otisco, NY, Paul (Vicky) Borer of Sparta, NJ, Dr. Mary Margaret Perez of Rochester, John Borer of Freedom, NY, Mary Catherine (Ted) Wright of Homer, NY, Dr. Joseph (Kimberly) Borer of Boston and Mary Suzanne "Bodhi" (Bob Cushing) Borer of Cazenovia; 34 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, Gerald (Darlene) Gerwitz and John (Marcia) Gerwitz; 2 sisters, Jane Dunkleman and Sister Mary Jane Gerwitz.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 8:00 am in the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME and 9:00 am in St. John the Baptist Church. Family and friends may call at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse on Thursday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Burial will be in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Arcade, NY at a later date.
