Gilbert C. Bonin's Obituary
Gilbert C. Bonin, 97, went to be with the Lord on May 22, 2024. He was born in Ridgewood, NY, the son of the late Charles and Rose (Diesel) Bonin.
Gilbert served in the US Air Force beginning in 1944 when he entered basic training at Shepard Air Force Base. Upon completion of basic training in 1945, he was transferred to Amarillo Air Force Base where he worked on the B29 aircrafts. In 1949, upon his honorable discharge, he attended Rutgers University with support from the ROTC and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Gilbert was employed with General Electric for over 35 dedicated years. At the end of his career, Gilbert taught aspiring engineers as his way of giving back to the community.
In retirement, Gilbert enriched his life further by being an integral part of all his grandchildren’s lives. He could often be seen in the bleachers attending one of his grandchildren’s events. His grandchildren truly were his pride and joy, and they made his life complete!
Gilbert was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church. He enjoyed bike riding, gardening, skiing, and golfing. Gilbert often enjoyed the Cortland Repertoire Theater with his late wife, Laurice.
Along with his parents, Gilbert was predeceased by his wife, Laurice in 2018, son-in-law, Timothy W. Gacek, and sisters, Dorothy Bonin Prinz, and Mae Bonin Letsch.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his daughter, Renée (Douglas) Moonan; son, David (Jean) Bonin; daughter, Lauren Gacek; beloved grandchildren, Shawn and Riley Moonan, Brittany (Nicholas Chiaramonte), Beth and Brian Bonin, Andrew and Brendan Gacek; great-granddaughter, Reese Moonan; along with several nieces and nephews.
A memorial Mass in celebration of Gilbert’s life will be held on Friday, May 31, 2024, at 10:00 A.M. in St. Rose of Lima Church 409 S. Main St. North Syracuse, NY 13212.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Gilbert’s memory may be made to The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation - CNY Chapter, 100 Metropolitan Dr. Liverpool, NY 13088.
