Grace Louise (LaBrecque) Herzog's Obituary
Grace L. (LaBrecque) Herzog, 92, of Syracuse, NY, passed peacefully on Friday, July 17, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Penn Yan, NY and a long time resident of Syracuse’s north side, she was a graduate of Central High School and an active member of the Alethean Alumnae Association. Referring to themselves as the Rah-Rahs, Grace’s strongly bonded sorority sisters maintained their lighthearted friendships and monthly get togethers for 75 fun filled years. Grace was a lifetime communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, where she spent countless hours as a volunteer for both the parish as well as its parochial school, where all of her children attended. She was employed by the War Department, U.S. Engineers, in Syracuse and in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Grace and her late husband Paul resided in several states during his service in the U.S. Army Core of Engineers (Philadelphia, PA, Seattle, WA, and New Jersey) before settling in Paul’s hometown of Syracuse where they raised their family. For Grace, family, neighbors and friends held the utmost priority in her life, and her contagious laughter, beautiful smile, positivity, kindness, compassion and over abundance of love for those she met was undeniable. Grace was known for her empathetic ear, quick wit, sparkling effervescence and generous soul. Her love of children and family led her to become a very active volunteer at her children’s schools and activities, and later in life, a cherished aide at Mother Hubbard’s Nursery Garden in North Syracuse.
Grace is predeceased by her parents, Omer and Lydia (Mace) LaBrecque; three sisters, Marion (Albright), Marguerite “Peg” (Giersberg), Fern (Burlingame); one brother, Omer (LaBrecque), and her husband of 66 years, Paul W. Herzog.
Grace is survived by her three daughters, Nancy Herzog of Fayetteville, NY, Patricia Herzog-Mesrobian of Milwaukie, WI and Janice Herzog (Joshua Heintz) of Manlius, NY; three sons, Paul T. (Dottie) Herzog of Syracuse, Christopher Herzog of Liverpool, NY and Gregory (Joanne) Herzog of Jackson Hole, WY; 14 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call from 9:30 am to 11:00 am on Monday, July 27, 2015 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse. A Funeral Mass in celebration of Grace’s life will follow at Noon in St. John the Baptist Church. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to Hospice of CNY, 990 Seventh North St., Liverpool, NY 13088.
