Harriet Dorothy (Sitnik) Charles' Obituary
Harriet Dorothy (Sitnik) Charles, 100, of Fayetteville, NY, passed away at the Francis House with her daughter Marsha by her side on Saturday, December 10, 2016. She was born in Nanticoke, PA, daughter of the late Anthony Sitnik and Mary Danielowicz.
Harriet met her husband Matt while traveling on a bus trip to play basketball in Rochester; together, they owned and operated Varsity Sport Shop. She won several awards for basketball in her day and became an avid golfer in her later years. She was a member of the Syracuse women's district golf league and a member of Drumlins Country Club and Lakeshore Yacht and Country Club. Harriet was also a longtime active member of St. John the Evangelist Church in Syracuse and currently a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Fayetteville. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and weekend cards with her many friends.
She was predeceased by her husband of 72 years, Matthew Charles; her daughter, Mary Anne Charles Dean; sisters, Ceil Broton and Lena Degroot, and a brother, Edward Sitnik.
Harriet is survived by her son, Matthew (Geraldine) of Jupiter, Florida; her daughter, Marsha (Mike) McCarthy of Fayetteville, NY; her grandchildren, Theresa (Robert) Martin of Syracuse, Martin (Chaya) Charles of Central Square, Colleen Rivers (Bo) Forehand of East Syracuse, Chris Charles of Jupiter, FL., Johanna (Steven) Bourdon of Thompson Station, TN, Matthew (Monique) Dean of Syracuse, Nicole Dean of Zephyr Hills, FL; eleven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A calling hour will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2016 from 10 – 11 AM, immediately followed by a Funeral Mass in celebration of Harriet’s life at Immaculate Conception Church, Fayetteville. Entombment will be in St. Mary’s Mausoleum, Dewitt. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME.
