Helen (Corey) Essi's Obituary
Helen C. Essi, of Clay, NY, passed away on January 22, 2018 with her daughter by her side.
Born on January 22, 1929 in Syracuse, Helen graduated from Nottingham High school. She owned and operated Elm Hill Liquor Store for 20 years with her sister Evelyn Corey.
The last 21 years, Helen’s greatest joy and mission was in spending time with her two grandsons, Kyle and Kevin. Come Hell or high water, Helen didn’t miss a beat, making sure she was there from Little League baseball through College basketball games. She was an integral part of the fiber of the family. For years the “Lunch Crew” at St. Margaret’s School welcomed her as she volunteered in the cafeteria, all for the sake of getting to be with her boys. Those that knew her can attest to the fact that nothing kept Helen down. She maintained her love of driving and independence right up until her passing and was ready to argue her driving ability with the DMV as her 89th birthday approached.
Her resilience and strong will made for lively conversations around the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, her daughter and friends.
Where you found Helen, there you found her daughter Patty as she was Helen’s constant support and companion.
Helen is predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Ruth Corey, and her sister, Evelyn Corey.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Kenneth) Hawk; her grandsons, Kyle, 21 and Kevin, 19; her lunch mates and great friends, Addie Weigand and Pat Mucci along with her former husband, Issa (Chris) Essi and several cousins.
Family and friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY. A graveside service will be held at 12:30 pm on Friday, January 26, 2018 at Oakwood Cemetery.
