Irene A. Monto's Obituary
Irene A. Monto, 93, passed away peacefully at Iroquois Nursing Home on Thursday, November 15, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Irene was a 1942 graduate of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception School in Syracuse and worked in accounting for General Motors for 36 years, becoming the first female supervisor in her department in the Fisher Body division. She was also a member of Assumption Church for most of her life.
Throughout her years, Irene was an avid golfer and a passionate bowler; into her early nineties, she still met weekly with a group of ladies she used to golf with for lunch each Thursday. Irene also played cards with the same group of friends monthly for seventy years. She loved to read and was a faithful viewer of the daytime drama “The Young and the Restless,” for over thirty years. Irene, her husband, Ernie, and their family derived endless hours of contentment at their lakeside home in West Monroe for the better part of 27 years. Following the untimely death of her husband, Ernie, in 1998, Irene traveled the world for several years.
Irene is survived by her beloved son, Ted (Terrie) Monto; two granddaughters, Kate and Irene; several nieces; nephews, Donald and Andrew Ambabo; great-nieces and nephews; a cousin, Dorothy Medicus; and granddog, Disco Monto; a special thank you to relatives and friends, MaryAnn (Frank) Grower, Melissa (Kevin) Nograsek, Patricia Dourghety, Dale Van Buren, and Cherrie Bratt. The family would also like to thank Irene and Ernie’s neighbors, Tony and Carmela Maggi, for their unfailing kindness and love over the years. Lastly, Irene’s family would not be adequately represented without mentioning her beloved dog and constant companion, Rock Hudson, as he is also a heartbroken survivor.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital and the staff at Iroquois Nursing Home for their care.
Funeral services will be held at 8:00 am on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, followed by a Funeral Mass in celebration of Irene’s life at 9:00 am in Assumption Church, Syracuse. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Syracuse. Family and friends may call from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on Monday, November 19, 2018 at the funeral home, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY.
