Izaak "Jack" Overdyk's Obituary
Izaak “Jack” Overdyk passed away peacefully at Menorah Park on March 15, 2018. He was surrounded by family. Jack was born in Leiden, Holland on May 27, 1934. He was predeceased by his parents, Cornelia and Theodorus and his sisters, Marie, Lena, and Cornelia. Jack is survived by his wife, Johanna Buschman Overdyk; his brother, Theo (Marian) who lives in Holland; his four children, Tess, Marc (Joanie), Reneé (John) and Kevin (Kim); nine grandchildren, Carly, Jack, Max, Catherine, Luke, Elizabeth, Nate, Josie, and Sinéad.
Jack was born and raised in The Netherlands. Jack was 5 years old when WWII started; he and his family endured the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland for five years until the war ended in 1945. His mother passed away one year later. When he was 18, Jack enlisted in the Royal Dutch Navy and later served as a merchant marine before coming to the U.S. in 1960. Jack worked at Lyndon Chemical for many years, but his greatest work and love was photography. He worked for Hawley Studios and The Syracuse New Times. His children and grandchildren were his favorite subjects and he left behind a beautiful portfolio of photographs that we will all cherish forever.
Jack enjoyed playing chess and was an avid music fan. He had an impressive music collection that included hundreds of classical, jazz, and R&B record albums. He was also an enthusiastic soccer fan, and one of the highlights of his life was going with his sons Marc and Kevin to see the Royal Dutch team in the 2002 World Cup. Jack and Johanna were married for 58 years; from the time they spent biking along the North Sea in Holland on their first date, to the time they spent together at their home in Fayetteville, there was no one he would rather be with than his loving wife.
The family would like to thank the dedicated people at Menorah Park who took such great care of him for the past five years, especially Wayne Glover who cheered Jack up every time he walked into the room.
Family and friends may call at THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 from 5:00 -8:00 pm. A Funeral Mass in celebration of Jack’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Holy Cross Church, 4112 E. Genesee St. Dewitt, NY. Private burial will be in Fayetteville Cemetery.
