Jacobus "Jack" Poot's Obituary
Jacobus "Jack" Poot, 88, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully on September 2, 2019 at Van Duyn Center where he resided for the past five years while courageously battling dementia. He was born and raised in the Netherlands, however his scientific talents brought he, his wife and three children to the United States in the late 1960’s. where he became the College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF)’s Scientific Glassblower. As a loving father and devoted husband, he saw this as an opportunity to fulfill their American dream. He retired from SUNY ESF after a thirty-year career.
His love for the ocean then took he and wife to North Myrtle Beach where they enjoyed 20 years of retirement in their beautiful house near the beach. Their garden filled picturesque home welcomed their friends, family and relatives from the Netherlands to come and enjoy the peacefulness of it all. As he and his wife of then 60 years always said it was their “little piece of paradise”.
Jacobus is predeceased by his wife, Geertruida (Berkien) Poot. He leaves behind his son, Rudy (Maria) Poot of Mill Valley, CA; son, Robert Poot of San Diego, CA; daughter, Judith (Bryin) Herzig of Fayetteville, NY. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Chelsea Lynn Herzig, Erica and Sara Poot, along with his loving brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews in the Netherlands.
The family would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to the nursing staff on the 3rd and 4th floor at Van Duyn! Thank you for all your care and compassion. Jacobus will forever be a part of your crew! Also, a special thank you to Courtney Eggleston (Optum Care) your care and compassion will also never be forgotten.
We will forever honor and celebrate Jacobus’ life. Let’s remember all the laughter he would bring and all the love he gave. “A beautiful face will age, and a perfect body will change, but a beautiful soul will always be a beautiful soul”.
