James A. Mandel's Obituary
James A. Mandel, 91, of East Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. James was born in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Isadore and Jennie (Fair) Mandel. He received his PhD from Syracuse University and was a Professor of Civil Engineering there for many years. As a sports fan, James enjoyed basketball and ice hockey.
In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his first wife, Rita J. (Sommer) Mandel; his brother, Steven Mandel; and his best friend, Spike.
James is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Lisi) Mandel; his children, Belinda Rose and Robert K. Mandel; his grandchildren, Lily, Katie, Robert, Jennie, and Rachel; his close friend, Eric Lui; his feline companions, Rizzo and Blue; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 3, 2026, from 12:00 (noon) – 2:00 P.M. at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse. He will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery, Syracuse.
