James P. Place, 79, of Syracuse passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at Upstate University Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Jim was born in Detroit, MI to the late Ivan and Anna (Poole) Place and grew up in Co Read Obituary
By the mere fact I remember Jim from my freshman literature course in 2013 speaks to Jim's effectiveness as an educator. He was a riveting story teller who cared deeply about his students, who meanwhile held us to high academic standards. Jim always modeled exemplary written expression and research strategies. He was always quick with a joke/ roast, available to listen, and gave feedback in a serious, yet hysterical manner.
I was, am, and forever will be forever grateful to you, Jim! You have changed my life and now my own students' lives for the better! You will never be forgotten.

When I first arrived in Syracuse to start teaching at OCC, Jim treated me to dinner at his favorite restaurant, the Black Olive. He spared no expense in making a complete stranger feel welcomed in a new town.
Since that time, in the ten years I worked with Jim, we became good friends. I will miss the energy and enthusiasm that Jim brought with him to life and to work. I will miss hearing his tales of traveling and teaching in Greece and Italy and the many kind words his students would share about him. But most of all, I'll just miss him.
Thanks for everything, Jim.
I remember fondly those years I spent with Jim in Corning working during the holidays at my uncles clothing store. We’d venture to the Victoria restaurant for pie after work. I am six years his junior but we often discussed various topics as we were contemporaries. We were both single at the time and often did a lot of dreaming.The entire Bacalles family sends their thoughts and prayers to the Place family and although I haven’t seen Jim in a long time, I know he will be sorely missed by all. I was saddened to hear of Jim's passing. Over the past 11 years, we shared many light moments in the lobby of Imperial Gardens discussing horses and your involvement, Stephanie, in our mutual "hobby". He was very proud of you as a horsewoman and he loved to share details of his rides as a youth. May you find comfort in the many memories you have of your Dad and his love for you.

I am genuinely sorry to hear of your loss. I so enjoyed my time working with Jim here at Onondaga Community. I first met him when I hired him to teach for the college's EOP summer program. The students so admired him; they knew he wanted them to succeed because he would go the extra mile to help them with their coursework. I was so impressed with his genuine care and support of students that I encouraged my two children to take their English requirements with him. Along with many students, I will forever be grateful to have had him grace my life.

Jim and I had many laughs and many tears together throughout our lives. He was a great guy with diverse talents . And yes his cheesecake and homemade eggnog during the holidays was the BEST! Our condolences to Stephanie and Marsha.
