Jeanette J. (Echeandia) Del Rio's Obituary
Jeanette J. (Echeandia) Del Rio passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Monday, July 17, 2023. Jeanette, the second eldest of eleven children, was born in Puerto Rico on July 18, 1924. She was a steadfast matriarch who completely devoted herself to her family. As well as raising her siblings and her own children, Jeanette had a significant role in raising her grandchildren. After falling in love, eloping, and immigrating to the United States with her husband, they laid roots down in New York. She learned English by playing Scrabble, which became an iconic game for her entire family.
Jeanette was an adventurous woman who was determined to bring Puerto Rican culture and life to her family in New York. She could often be found taking all day nature hikes with her many grandchildren, encouraging them to pick blueberries and apples and bathe in the creek. As she raised chickens, gardened, and adopted farm animals, she opened many children’s eyes to nature and their hearts to love. She consistently opened her heart and home to countless people, making everyone who met her feel like family.
Predeceased by husband Demetrio (Tato) Del Rio, her only son Demetrio (Tito) Del Rio and grandson Demetrio (Tony) Del Rio.
Survived by five children, Alba Martinez and children Laura, Viveca and Andre, Jeanette Del Rio Vlahakis (Steve) children Michelle, Peter and Benjamin.
