Joan M. Dishaw's Obituary
Joan “Joanie” M. Dishaw, 67, of Syracuse, passed away August 27, 2022 at Crouse Hospital. She was born in Syracuse, daughter of the late Robert and Nora Madeline (Finley) Dishaw. Joanie attended Thomas J. Corcoran High School and became a licensed cosmetologist after attending LA Ponto Beauty School. She was a successful hairdresser and Legal Aid; she went on to run the PEACE program at Brighton Towers during her retirement. She loved butterflies and playing Bingo, and was also a big Loretta Lynn fan. Joanie was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, great aunt & friend to many. She was 1 of 11 children; family meant everything to her, and she was the glue that held everyone together.
She is predeceased by her grandson, Dylan Cheek in 2013; siblings, David Dishaw, Robert Dishaw, Jr. James Dishaw, Thomas (Colleen) Dishaw, Rosemary White, and Cheryl (Daniel) Taylor.
Joanie is survived by two sons, Gregory Cheek (Shana Testa) and Jeffrey Cheek; grandchildren, Tiara Cheek, Gregory Cheek, Jr., Jeffrey Gibson, Ondreya Bauzo, Valencia, Makyah and Santana Cheek; great-grandchildren, Kiara and Arabella Vega-Cheek; Jaxson Smith, Anahliah Thompson, and Jinora Lee Gibson; siblings, Earl (Patti) Dishaw, Michael Dishaw, Michelle Vanaglash, and John (Maria) Dishaw; 19 nieces, 15 nephews, and many more great nieces and nephews.
Special shout out to her niece, LaShanna White, better known as the daughter she never had. You made her complete.
Special thank you to her Friends that became like Family at Brighton Towers and her work crew at the PEACE program.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 from 9 – 10:45 am at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse, NY, followed by a funeral mass at noon in Our Lady of Hope Church, 4845 S. Salina St., Syracuse, NY, with burial in Onondaga Valley Cemetery.
