Joseph A. Antelmi's Obituary
Joseph A. Antelmi, 97, of Syracuse, passed away on January 17, 2019 at the VA Medical Center. He was born on December 20, 1921 in Syracuse, NY to Rocco and Angela Antelmi. Joe graduated from North High School, Syracuse University and the Aetna School of Insurance. In his youth, Joe was a member of the Progress Youth Drum & Bugle Corps. He also taught himself how to play the harmonica, which became a lifelong love of his. Joe started working at a local barbershop at 8 years old, and later became a barber. Joe was a WWII veteran. He served in the 14th armored division, Service Company 25th Tank Battalion, the 7th army General Patch, 3rd army General Patton and Battle of the Bulge.
Joe met his wife through a mutual friend when she was only 16. Two years later they met up again and fell in love. They were married in September 1948. He was the founder and president of his own insurance company called Antelmi, Fusco & Cazzola in Liverpool for over 50 years.
He was a member of many organizations/clubs throughout his life. Such as a Financial Chairman of the Boy Scouts (Mohawk District), Progresso Lodge 1047, Sons of Italy, Lincoln Republican Club, Town of Salina Republican president, Italian American Athletic Club, president of the ushers and member of the Holy Name Society both at Our Lady of Pompei Church. He was also, a longtime member of the Lakeshore Yacht and Country Club.
Joe always loved people and socializing with family and friends. He always had a kind word to say to whomever he knew.
He was predeceased by his wife, Philomena “Fannie” whom he was married to for 68 years and his son, Joseph, Jr.
Surviving are his daughters, Rosemary Gelormini and Angela (Karl) Knittel and son, Albert Antelmi; grandchildren, Lisa, Michael, Mandy and Marie; great-granddaughters, Eva and Gabby; his sister, Zella Paone; brothers-in-law, Tony and Reno; also, many nieces and nephews.
Per Joe's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A Funeral Mass in celebration of Joe’s life will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Our Lady of Pompei/St. Peter Church, 301 Ash St., Syracuse, NY, followed by entombment with Military Honors at Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum.
