Joseph Curinga's Obituary
Joseph Curinga, 79, of Eastwood, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 31, 2023 surrounded by his family. He was born to the late Pietro and Antoinette (DelGuidice) Curinga in 1944 and grew up on the northside of Syracuse, NY. When he was old enough, Joe’s mother brought him downtown to the barber school where he crafted his 60-year career as a Master Barber. Joe married his soulmate Dixie on August 6, 1966 and together they instilled strong family values and a sense of community in their children and grandchildren. Joe was a man of unwavering dedication to his family, community, and profession. His barbershop was not only a place to get a haircut, but where countless stories were shared, and lifelong friendships were forged. Beyond his profession, Joe was a true community leader; he volunteered as a coach, umpire and then president of the Eastwood Little League for over 25 years. His passion for the game was evident as he focused his efforts on fostering young athletes' love for the game while promoting and demonstrating good sportsmanship.
One year ago, as a veteran, Joe was able to participate in the Honor Flight with his brothers Ted and Pete. At the National Mall, they paid tribute to their late brother Frank, a veteran who passed away before being able to join them.
Joe was predeceased in death by his parents Pietro and Antoinette (DelGuidice) Curinga; brother Michael Curinga; sister-in-law Mary Fox; sister-in-law Doris Curinga; and brother Frank Curinga.
Joe will be remembered as a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dixie (Richart); his son, Joel (Brenda) Curinga; his daughters, Amy (Zisis) Sakellariou and Liz Curinga (Chris Cherwa); six loving grandchildren, Dominic, Vincent, Antoinette, Max, Joey, and Bobbi; five brothers, Theodore (Ruth), Gerald (Vicki), Peter (Jean), Andrew (Pattie), and Rocco (Cathy); along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will take place from 3:00 – 5:00 P.M. on Friday, November 10, 2023 immediately followed by a funeral service in celebration of Joseph’s life at 5:00 P.M. at the THOMAS J. PIRRO JR. FUNERAL HOME, 3401 Vickery Rd. (corner of Buckley Rd.) North Syracuse. He will be laid to rest in Assumption Cemetery.
