Joseph F. Gangemi's Obituary
Joseph F. Gangemi, 82, of Liverpool, passed away on June 17, 2014 at Crouse Hospital. He was born on April 6, 1932 in Syracuse, NY, to the late Anthony and Santina Gangemi. Joe attended North High, Lemoyne College and Syracuse University. He served in the U.S. Army. Joe retired from the Syracuse School System in 1991 after 34 years of teaching. He was an avid golfer who proudly achieved his goal of hitting a hole in one. Joe loved a good joke and entertained his family and friends until the end. He also loved to work around the house and was quick to help his family with any home improvement project.
He was predeceased by siblings, Chris, Larry, Virginia, Mickey, Angie and Josie.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Mary (Warn) Gangemi, and daughters, Marcia (Bill) Dosch, Lenora (Rick) Counts, and Ellen (Mike) Featherstone; 4 grandchildren, Anna, Marina, Stefan, and Jonathan; 2 brothers, Frank (Charleen) and Tony (Angel), along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Special thanks to the staff at Brittonfield Hematology/Oncology Department, especially Dr. Himpler and N.P. Anne Roman for being unrelenting allies of Joseph, in his courageous battle with MDS. Thanks also to the staff of Crouse Hospital, 4 South, especially, Molly, NP, and nursing staff, Kelly, Amy, Bobbi, Anne Marie, Robyn, Lauren, Beth and Crystal, and Drs. Scalzo and Gullo, for profoundly touching Joe’s Life. Thanks to the North Medical Staff 5th floor Surgery Center for their kind, compassionate care. A heartfelt thanks to Fr. Werner, John Sgroi, Len and Rosemary Sellin, Len and Cathy Van Tassel, and Carla Ciamerella for their friendship and help.
Family and friends are invited to attend a calling hour on Thursday, June 26, 2014 from 9:00 to 10:00 am at St. John the Baptist Church, followed by a funeral mass in celebration of Joe’s life at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in the Onondaga County Veterans Cemetery.
